Upcoming 50 Year Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Wilmington 50 Year Commemoration Commission’s April 4, 2018, event to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King and his commitment to promoting peace, social justice, and reconciliation. The event will be held in the Williston Middle School gymnasium from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All are invited to attend, and attendees are asked to wear black and gold.

Dr. King was supposed to be speaking in Wilmington, NC on the day of his assassination. A sanitation strike in Memphis caused him to cancel his appearance at Williston Senior High School, which had dire consequences. With the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s death on April 4, 2018, Wilmington is uniquely situated to commemorate the occasion.

During the event, a historical marker will be unveiled in the Williston Middle School Gymnasium in Dr. King’s honor as well as guest speakers and music to celebrate the occasion.
